3. Photo d'art : L'impression grand format

La meilleure façon de s'assurer qu'une image ne tombe pas dans l'oubli et ne soit pas jetée dès votre corps refroidi, c'est de l'imprimer en grand format et de, avec un peu de chance, de la vendre. Un acheteur conservera une photo qu'il a payée le fort prix. De même, vous pouvez en donner à des êtres chers, à des amis, ai cela les intéresse bien sûr. Et si les oeuvres sont de qualité, cela devrait se faire facilement.

Parce que tout est là. Une oeuvre imprimée en grand format prend une toute autre dimension, un nouvel esprit difficile à décrire. Mais l'impression grand format attire le regard et l'oeuvre, au lieu de ne se mériter qu'un coup d'oeil en passant, devient quelque chose que l'on admire, de loin comme de près.

Le format 20x30 po, soit 50x75 cm, est un format d'impression qui convient bien à une maison ordinaire tout en ne coûtant pas les yeux de la tête à imprimer (et encadrer selon la technique d'impression). Mais un tel format nécessite un fichier de 6000 par 9000 pixels, soit 54 mégapixels, ce qui est tout de même gros. Une impression en vue d'une exposition demandera des fichiers de 8000 par 12000 pixels ou plus.

Il n'est plus question de tourner les coins ronds. Il faut travailler méticuleusement, corriger tous les défauts et ils sont en général beaucoup plus nombreux qu'on ne le pense, et effectuer un post-traitement par calques pour travailler par zones avec le plus de contrôle possible.

Comme exemple, voici la photo de l'intérieur d'une maison gaspésienne abandonnée. J'ai dû travailler par HDR à partir de cinq photos différentes, une technique sur laquelle je reviendrai.

La photo en elle-même est d'un intérêt au plus moyen. Je m'en sers ici pour montrer dans une deuxième image la précision d'une partie de l'image vue en très grand format.

The best way to make sure an image isn't instantly forgotten, and thrown away with your hard disks the second you pass away, is to print them in large format and, with a bit of luck, to sell them. A buyer will certainly take care of a work of art for which he paid a good price. And of course, you can give some to friends and family members, people who care about your work, if they are interested. And with a good quality print of an interesting image, it's usually the case.

Because this is the name of the game. A large-format print is a totally new piece of art with a new life of its own. A good print on a wall drags the eyes towards it and suddenly the work of art becomes something to be admired for a period of time, not only something that's good for a passing glance as is usually the case on the web.

The 20z30 in (50x75 cm) format is a good one to be hung in a house. Besides that, printing and framing (depending on the printing technique) is not so expensive in that size. But one must not forget that in order to create such a print, you need 6000 by 9000 pixel file, preferably but not necessarily in 8 bits per colour. This is the equivalent of 54 megapixels which is not small by all means. Bigger prints, for exhibition purposes for example, will ask for 8000 by 12000 pixels files or more.

Don't think of cutting corners when creating such files. This is meticulous work. You must eliminate or alleviate all little flaws with are always much more numerous than one would wish. The best method involves layers for more control, a technique that I will present further down the road.

Here is an example: the interior of an abandoned house in the Gaspé peninsula. I had to use the HDR technique with five different shots and will explain how to do that later.

This is a rather ordinary photo. It's resolution is 10000 x 15000 pixels and I'm using it here only to show in a second image the level of precision of part of the image boosted to 100 percent.
